FAQs About Genetic Counseling
Commonly asked questions about genetic counseling

What is a Genetic Counselor?

Genetic counselors are health professionals with specialized graduate degrees and experience in the areas of medical genetics and counseling. Genetic counselors work as members of a health care team, providing information and support to families who have members with birth defects or genetic disorders and to families who may be at risk for a variety of inherited conditions. They identify families at risk, investigate the problem present in the family, interpret information about the disorder, analyze inheritance patterns and risks of recurrence and review available options with the family.  Genetic counselors also provide supportive counseling to families, serve as patient advocates and refer individuals and families to community or state support services. They serve as educators and resources for other health care professionals and for the general public. Some counselors also work in administrative capacities. Many engage in research activities related to the field of medical genetics and genetic counseling. (Adopted by the National Society of Genetic Counselors, Inc. 1983)

My doctor referred me for genetic counseling.  What can I expect during my session?

Our genetic counselor will meet with you and discuss the reason your doctor referred you to our practice.  Our counselor will answer any questions you and your family may have, explain possible testing options and ask questions about your family and personal health histories.

I’m interested in learning more about the risk for Down syndrome and other conditions in my pregnancy.  Are there any tests available?

Absolutely!  Please review the brochure of screenings.  Our physicians and genetic counselor would be happy to discuss any of these tests with you and help you choose the option that feels right for your pregnancy.

Will I receive results on the day of my appointment?

It depends on what tests are being performed.  Our physicians will meet with you during an ultrasound and you will often receive results at that time.  Other tests may take a few days or weeks until we get results.  If that is the case, our staff will make sure we have appropriate contact numbers for you and will get in touch with you as soon as your results are available.
